A High Court sitting in Maiduguri, Borno State, has sentenced a 33-year-old woman, Salamatu Saidu, to five years imprisonment for human trafficking.
According to the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), Saidu was convicted for the fraudulent trafficking of two persons, aged 21 and 33, in violation of Section 26(2) of the Trafficking in Persons (Prohibition) Enforcement and Administration Act, 2015.
The court, presided over by Justice Bukar M. Umar, reportedly delivered the conviction and sentence on the same day the defendant was arraigned, in what has been described as a swift prosecution.
NAPTIP said the conviction reflects ongoing efforts to crack down on human trafficking and related crimes across Nigeria, particularly through stronger enforcement and prosecution.
The agency explained that “fraudulent entry of persons” involves knowingly facilitating the illegal movement of people through deception or unlawful means, an offence covered under Nigeria’s anti-trafficking laws.
The case adds to a growing number of convictions secured by NAPTIP as authorities intensify efforts to combat trafficking networks and protect vulnerable persons from exploitation.
