Bandits have killed a Community Health Officer and five other persons in a violent attack on a community in Zamfara State, while also setting a primary health facility ablaze, in one of the latest assaults targeting rural settlements in the North-West.
According to reports, the attackers stormed the community in large numbers on motorcycles, shooting sporadically and causing residents to flee for safety. During the invasion, the health centre was torched, destroying medical equipment and disrupting essential healthcare services in the area.
Security sources confirmed that during the confrontation, security operatives engaged the attackers in a gun duel, with several of the bandits reportedly killed while others escaped with gunshot wounds. However, the attack still left at least six civilians dead, including the health worker.
The incident forms part of the ongoing wave of banditry affecting Zamfara State, where armed groups frequently target villages, public infrastructure, and security outposts, often leaving behind casualties and widespread destruction.
Authorities say efforts are ongoing to restore calm in the affected area, while security operations have been intensified to track down the perpetrators and prevent further attacks.
The latest violence adds to growing concerns over insecurity in the region, particularly the repeated targeting of healthcare facilities and frontline workers, which further weakens already strained rural health services.
