At least 42 people have been killed in fresh intercommunal violence in eastern Chad after a dispute over a water well escalated into deadly ethnic clashes, authorities said.

The violence reportedly erupted in Guereda, in Wadi Fira province near Chad’s border with Sudan, where tensions between rival groups spiralled into reprisals. Officials said at least 10 others were injured in the fighting.

Chad’s Deputy Prime Minister, Limane Mahamat, said the situation had been brought under control after the government deployed senior officials and military personnel to the area. Authorities also said customary mediation and judicial processes had been initiated to prevent further escalation.

The clash has renewed concerns over recurring violence linked to competition over land and water resources in Chad, particularly between farming communities and nomadic herders. Analysts say such tensions have worsened in recent years, partly due to pressure from the conflict in neighbouring Sudan and the influx of refugees into border regions.
