Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed has cancelled his planned defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) following the collapse of talks over political conditions attached to the move.
The proposed defection, which had generated wide speculation within political circles ahead of the 2027 elections, reportedly broke down after disagreements over power-sharing arrangements and control of party structures in Bauchi State. Sources familiar with the discussions said the APC was unwilling to accept conditions that would have given the governor’s camp significant influence over the state party structure.
Governor Mohammed’s camp later confirmed that after consultations with stakeholders, the negotiations could not continue because the terms being discussed were not acceptable to the APC leadership. As a result, the planned move was officially shelved, bringing an end to weeks of political uncertainty.
With the development, Bala Mohammed remains in the PDP, where he continues to be one of the party’s most prominent figures in the North-East. The collapse of the defection talks is also seen as a setback for early political realignments ahead of 2027, especially given the expectations that the governor might switch camps.
