Nigerian filmmaker Mildred Okwo has stirred debate over the future of the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards, suggesting the 2026 edition could be the last.
Okwo made the remark in a post on X, saying she would be “very surprised” if the current AMVCA is not the farewell edition, citing concerns over the awards’ long-term sustainability.
She linked her concerns to recent ownership changes involving MultiChoice and broader questions over whether the awards can continue attracting investment under a business model focused heavily on return on investment. She argued that the event is expensive to stage and may struggle to survive if new owners prioritise profitability.
Her comments come as Showmax continues to be positioned as a major growth focus, fueling speculation that costly legacy productions such as AMVCA could face pressure under evolving content strategies.
Okwo’s remarks have sparked concern within entertainment circles, especially as the 12th AMVCA, scheduled for May 9, remains one of Africa’s biggest platforms for celebrating film and television excellence. Organisers have not indicated any plans to discontinue the awards.
