A UK court has sentenced a Nigerian national to life imprisonment after a shocking and unprovoked street killing in Leicester.
The convict, Chukwuemeka Ahanonu, 24, was found guilty of murdering a 56-year-old woman, Nila Patel, in what authorities described as a random and brutal attack.
The incident dates back to June 2025, when Ahanonu had been driving recklessly through Leicester city centre swerving across lanes, running red lights, and endangering pedestrians before crashing his car.
What followed turned deadly. After the crash, he reportedly fled the scene and attacked Patel, who had just stepped off a bus and was walking home. She sustained severe injuries, including a fractured skull and brain trauma, and died two days later in hospital.
Investigators later revealed that Ahanonu had been under the influence of cannabis at the time, with drugs valued at over £3,000 recovered from his vehicle.
During the trial at Leicester Crown Court, the jury found him guilty of murder, leading to a life sentence. He had earlier pleaded guilty to other offences, including dangerous driving and possession of drugs.
Police described the killing as “horrific” and emphasized that the victim was completely unknown to the attacker making the crime both random and deeply disturbing.
The case has drawn attention not only because of its brutality but also because it highlights how quickly reckless behaviour can escalate into irreversible tragedy.
