A United Kingdom court has sentenced a 24-year-old Nigerian man, Chukwuemeka Ahanonu, to life imprisonment for the murder of a woman in Leicester.

The victim, Nila Patel, 56, was attacked in June 2025 along Infirmary Road after Ahanonu crashed his car while driving recklessly through the city.

According to police, the incident began with dangerous driving he was reportedly swerving across lanes, running red lights, and veering toward pedestrians before losing control of his vehicle.

After the crash, the situation escalated into a deadly attack. Ahanonu fled the vehicle and assaulted Patel, who had just stepped off a bus and was walking home. She suffered severe head injuries, including a fractured skull and brain trauma, and died two days later in hospital.

Investigators later revealed that he was under the influence of cannabis at the time, with drugs and other items recovered from his car.

Following a trial at Leicester Crown Court, a jury found him guilty of murder, leading to a life sentence. He had earlier pleaded guilty to other offences, including dangerous driving and drug-related charges.

Police described the attack as random and extremely violent, noting that the victim did not know her attacker and was simply on her way home when she was targeted.

The case has shocked many, not only because of its brutality but also because of how quickly reckless behaviour escalated into a fatal crime.
