Two travellers have been injured following a suspected bandit ambush along a highway in Zamfara State, once again highlighting the persistent insecurity affecting road users in Nigeria’s North-West region.

The incident reportedly occurred along the Gusau–Tsafe highway, a major road frequently used by commuters and commercial drivers in the state. According to local sources, the victims were part of a group returning from a condolence visit when armed men suddenly opened fire on their vehicle.

Witnesses said the gunmen, believed to be bandits, emerged from nearby bushes and began shooting at travellers moving along the road. The sudden attack caused panic among motorists as many attempted to speed away from the area to avoid being caught in the ambush.

During the attack, two members of the travelling group sustained gunshot injuries while others narrowly escaped the assault. The injured victims were quickly taken to a nearby hospital where they are currently receiving treatment.

Fortunately, no deaths or abductions were reported during the incident, although the attack left many travellers shaken.

Residents of communities near the highway said such attacks have become increasingly common in the area. Armed groups often target vehicles moving through isolated stretches of road, sometimes with the intention of kidnapping passengers or robbing motorists.

The Gusau–Tsafe road has long been considered a high-risk route due to repeated bandit attacks. In response, many travellers now avoid using the road at certain hours or prefer to move in convoys for safety.

Local residents have continued to call on the government and security agencies to strengthen patrols along the highway and dismantle criminal camps believed to be located in nearby forests.

Security authorities are yet to release a detailed official statement regarding the latest ambush, but efforts are expected to intensify to track down the perpetrators and prevent further attacks.

The incident adds to growing concerns about the security situation in parts of north-western Nigeria, where banditry and roadside attacks have continued to pose serious threats to communities and travellers alike.
