At least two children have died after drowning in a floodwater collection area in Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area, Edo State, authorities and eyewitnesses say, highlighting the dangers posed by stagnant floodwater.
The tragedy unfolded on Sunday at a designated floodwater catchment site on Erediauwa Street, off Sapele Road, where four children were playing near the muddy water. A witness said the children slipped into the deep, murky pool, and while two were pulled out lifeless, two others were rescued and taken to a nearby hospital, where they were resuscitated and treated.
The Edo State Police Command confirmed the incident, saying rescue teams were quickly dispatched after receiving reports and that efforts are ongoing to ensure the safety of children in flood-prone areas. Officials and residents have used the incident to stress the importance of supervision and caution around water-logged sites, especially during the rainy season.
The deaths come amid broader concerns over flooding hazards in parts of Nigeria, where heavy rains and poor drainage can lead to dangerous standing water particularly in urban areas where children may be tempted to play.
