Tension is rising once again in Nigeria’s university system as the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) issues a strong warning to the Federal Government over persistent salary delays and unpaid allowances.

At the heart of the crisis is frustration months of unresolved negotiations, delayed payments, and what the union describes as a growing disregard for workers’ welfare.

SSANU made its position clear after its National Executive Council meeting, where it expressed “grave concern” over the slow and inconclusive renegotiation process between the government and university unions.

But this is more than just complaints it’s a deadline.

The union has given the government a one-month ultimatum, from April 1 to April 30, 2026, to conclude negotiations and settle outstanding issues. Failure to meet this deadline, SSANU warns, will trigger a full-scale strike.

What’s Fueling the Crisis

The threats of industrial action stem from multiple unresolved issues:

  • Delayed salaries affecting staff in federal and some state universities
  • Unpaid and withheld allowances, including disputes over the ₦50bn earned allowances
  • Incomplete renegotiation of agreements between unions and government

According to the union, these delays have caused severe financial hardship, weakened morale, and reduced productivity across the university system.

SSANU is also demanding a more reliable salary structure, suggesting reforms to ensure payments are consistent and transparent.
