Seven individuals have been arraigned before a Lagos Magistrate’s Court for allegedly assaulting officials of the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) during the course of their duties.
The suspects were brought before the court by the Lagos State Government following an incident in which the LAWMA officials were reportedly attacked while carrying out enforcement activities related to environmental sanitation in parts of the state. Authorities said the assault disrupted the agency’s efforts to ensure proper waste management and maintain environmental standards.
According to the prosecution, the accused persons allegedly obstructed and physically attacked the sanitation workers, preventing them from performing their duties. The incident reportedly occurred when LAWMA officials attempted to enforce waste disposal regulations within the community.
The defendants were subsequently arrested and charged with offences including assault, obstruction of public officers, and conduct likely to cause a breach of peace. During the court proceedings, the suspects pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The magistrate granted them bail under certain conditions while adjourning the case to a later date for further hearing.
Officials of LAWMA have repeatedly warned that any form of violence or obstruction against sanitation workers will not be tolerated, stressing that the agency’s operations are essential for maintaining public health and environmental cleanliness in Lagos.
The Lagos State Government has also reiterated its commitment to enforcing sanitation laws, urging residents to cooperate with waste management officials and comply with environmental regulations to ensure a cleaner and healthier city.
