The Nigeria Police Force in Delta State have arrested five individuals, including a community leader and festival organiser, over the shocking assault of women during a local event.

The arrests followed widespread outrage after disturbing videos surfaced online showing groups of young men harassing, stripping, and assaulting women during a festival in Ozoro community.

The police spokesperson confirmed that the chief organiser, identified as Omorede Sunday, alongside four other suspects, has been taken into custody. They have since been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further probing.

Reports indicate that the incident occurred during an annual festival where women were allegedly expected to remain indoors. However, those who went out reportedly became targets of harassment and molestation by groups of men.

Some viral clips showed victims being chased, dragged, and publicly assaulted, sparking anger across social media and calls for justice. While there are claims that some victims may have been raped, authorities say investigations are still ongoing to confirm the full extent of the abuse.

Police authorities have condemned the incident, describing it as unacceptable and stressing that no cultural practice justifies violence or abuse. They also assured the public that all those involved will be identified and prosecuted.

The Delta State Government has also reacted strongly, labelling the acts as barbaric and urging security agencies to ensure justice is served.

This incident has reignited conversations about harmful cultural practices and the urgent need to protect women from gender-based violence across communities.
