A staff member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has been arraigned in court over allegations of attempting to procure an abortion that reportedly led to the death of a female corps member.

The defendant, identified as Abbas Olalekan, was brought before a Chief Magistrates’ Court in Abeokuta on charges including conspiracy and unlawful attempt to procure abortion.

According to the prosecution, the accused allegedly had a relationship with the corps member, which resulted in pregnancy. He is said to have supplied drugs intended to terminate the pregnancy.

Authorities claim that the drugs administered led to complications that eventually caused the young woman’s death.

The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges. The court granted him bail set at ₦500,000 with two sureties, while ordering that he be remanded pending the fulfillment of bail conditions.

The case has been adjourned for further hearing as investigations continue.

Meanwhile, the NYSC has confirmed that the incident is under investigation and has expressed condolences over the death of the corps member, assuring the public that justice will be pursued.

The case has sparked concern over the safety and welfare of corps members, as well as accountability within the system.
