An officer of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has died during a Ramadan and Sallah palliative distribution exercise in Tudun Wada Local Government Area of Kano State, officials say.
The tragic incident occurred on Friday at a programme organised by the member representing Doguwa/Tudun Wada Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Alhassan Ado Doguwa. The initiative was aimed at distributing relief materials to residents in observance of the holy month.
Confirming the death on Saturday, the NSCDC’s Kano State Public Relations Officer, Ibrahim Abdullahi, said the command has launched a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the officer’s death. He noted that the commandant ordered the probe to determine what exactly led to the tragic loss.
Lawmaker Doguwa alleged that the officer was killed after hoodlums attempted to disrupt the distribution exercise, leading to violence at the scene. He described the development as heartbreaking and extended his condolences to the NSCDC, the deceased officer’s family, and the people of Tudun Wada, praying for mercy and forgiveness for the deceased.
The incident has prompted calls for security agencies to intensify their efforts to ensure such humanitarian efforts are carried out safely and without interference. Authorities have also urged the public to avoid spreading unverified information linking the lawmaker directly to the violence, as investigations continue.
This tragedy underscores the tensions that can sometimes accompany relief distribution efforts in congested or politically sensitive environments and highlights the importance of enhanced security measures during public gatherings.
