Fear has once again gripped Ondo State following the abduction of six individuals during a church service in the state.

The victims identified as worshippers at a Celestial Church were kidnapped in the early hours of the morning along the Uso/Owo axis in Owo Local Government Area. According to police reports, the gunmen stormed the church at about 12:50 a.m., disrupting the service and whisking the victims away to an unknown destination.

The attack was sudden and coordinated, leaving members of the congregation in shock as the assailants fled before help could arrive.

Security agencies, including the police, Nigerian Army, and local vigilante groups, immediately launched a joint rescue operation. Their efforts have yielded some progress, with one victim already rescued and a suspected informant arrested in connection with the incident.

Still, the fate of the remaining victims remains uncertain.

The incident highlights a disturbing reality: even places of worship once seen as sanctuaries are no longer immune to Nigeria’s growing security challenges. In Ondo and other parts of the country, kidnapping has evolved into a persistent threat, targeting communities, travellers, and now, worshippers gathered in prayer.
