A late-night fire outbreak has destroyed more than 10 shops at the popular Terminus Market in Jos, the capital of Plateau State, leaving traders counting heavy losses.

The fire reportedly broke out around 10 p.m. on Saturday night, after traders had closed their shops for the day. Witnesses said flames suddenly engulfed a section of the busy market, sending thick smoke into the night sky as the fire spread through several stalls and goods stored inside them.

Traders and residents in the area attempted to salvage whatever they could from the affected shops as the blaze intensified. Many shop owners reportedly lost goods including clothing, shoes and other merchandise worth millions of naira.

Emergency responders quickly arrived at the scene to contain the fire. Teams from the National Emergency Management Agency, the Federal Fire Service, and the Plateau State Fire Service joined efforts to battle the flames and prevent the fire from spreading to other sections of the market.

Eyewitnesses commended the rapid response of the emergency teams, noting that their coordinated intervention helped prevent what could have become a much larger disaster in one of Jos’s busiest commercial centres.

Fortunately, no loss of life was reported during the incident, although the fire caused significant damage to property and goods belonging to several traders.

Authorities say the cause of the fire has not yet been determined, and investigations are expected to be carried out to establish what triggered the incident.

The latest incident has raised concerns among traders in Terminus Market, many of whom are calling for improved fire safety measures and better emergency preparedness to prevent similar disasters in the future.
