A 27-year-old Nigerian student has been arrested in South Africa for allegedly possessing cocaine valued at about ₦49 million.
The suspect was apprehended in the Umbilo area of KwaZulu-Natal by a joint team comprising the Metro Police Tactical Support Unit, Metro Police Task Team, and the South African Police Service (SAPS) Counter Narcotics Unit.
Authorities disclosed that the arrest followed the execution of a search warrant. The suspect was reportedly intercepted as he stepped out of his vehicle, where officers discovered high-purity cocaine concealed in a sock.
A subsequent search of his residence led to the recovery of additional наркотic substances, bringing the total estimated value of the seized drugs to over R600,000 (approximately ₦49 million).
Investigators revealed that the suspect had entered South Africa on a student visa and may have links to a previous drug-related case in 2025.
The arrest is part of a broader crackdown on a suspected drug trafficking network believed to involve multiple individuals, with authorities indicating that several other suspects have already been taken into custody.
Further details from investigators showed unusual financial activity, as funds reportedly continued to flow into the suspect’s bank account even after his arrest, prompting the involvement of South Africa’s Asset Forfeiture Unit.
The case highlights ongoing concerns about international drug trafficking operations and the involvement of foreign nationals, as law enforcement agencies intensify efforts to dismantle organised наркотic networks across borders.
