The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has intensified efforts to curb the impact of flooding by engaging key stakeholders in Niger State on preparedness and mitigation strategies.
The engagement, held in Minna, forms part of NEMA’s nationwide disaster preparedness campaign aimed at strengthening resilience in flood-prone communities ahead of the rainy season.
Speaking during the session, the agency emphasised the importance of early planning, coordinated response systems, and community awareness in reducing flood-related risks. Representatives highlighted the need for stronger collaboration between government bodies, local authorities, and grassroots organisations.
NEMA also noted that it is working closely with relevant agencies to monitor rainfall patterns and flood forecasts, ensuring that early warning systems reach vulnerable communities in good time. The agency plans to deploy teams across high-risk areas to sensitise residents and improve emergency response mechanisms.
Stakeholders present at the meeting including traditional leaders, community groups, and emergency responders were urged to take proactive roles in disaster management. The agency stressed that effective flood mitigation requires collective responsibility and timely action at all levels.
This move comes amid growing concerns over recurring floods in parts of Niger State, reinforcing the urgency for preventive measures rather than reactive responses.
