A devastating fire outbreak has razed property estimated to be worth millions of naira in Cross River State, leaving residents in shock and mourning the loss of homes and businesses.

The incident occurred in the early hours of Thursday at Ekori community in Akpabuyo Local Government Area, where a fire suddenly engulfed several structures, including residential buildings and commercial shops.

Eyewitnesses reported that the blaze spread rapidly, consuming everything in its path before fire service personnel could fully contain it. The state fire service, alongside community volunteers, worked tirelessly for hours to put out the flames, but not before significant damage had been done.

According to initial assessments, the combined value of destroyed properties is put at around ₦3 billion, highlighting the scale of the destruction and the heavy economic blow to those affected.

Tragically, while there were no confirmed casualties at the time of reporting, several people sustained injuries as they attempted to salvage belongings or fled the blazing buildings. Many residents have been left homeless or without means of livelihood as their shops and goods were lost in the inferno.

The cause of the fire has not yet been officially determined, though investigations are underway to establish whether it began from an electrical fault, cooking accident, or other source.

Community leaders and residents have appealed to the state government and humanitarian organisations for urgent relief support, including temporary shelter, food supplies, and rebuilding assistance.
