Students of Lagos State University of Education (LASUED) have expressed mourning and grief following the death of their colleague, Akinyemi Omo Akin, who was killed during a violent communal clash between youths from the Oto-Awori and Ijanikin communities in Lagos State.
The Lagos State chapter of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), acting through its Joint Campus Council, issued a statement condemning the killing and calling for justice and transparent investigations into the circumstances surrounding the tragedy. The student organisation criticised the Lagos State Police Command for its initial denial of responsibility without presenting forensic evidence or ballistic results to clarify how the fatal shot was fired.
At least three other people sustained varying degrees of injuries during the clash, which disrupted movement along the busy Lagos Badagry Expressway after youths allegedly mobilised cultists and engaged in gunfire before police intervention. The state police confirmed the death and said a full-scale investigation had been ordered, while also denying that the fatal bullet was fired by officers.
In calling for accountability, the student body urged the LASUED management, security agencies and community leaders to strengthen safety protocols around student residential areas, ensure proper engagement with law enforcement, and provide support and compensation to the bereaved family. Students were also encouraged to remain calm and law-abiding as authorities probe the incident.
