The Lagos State Government has launched an investigation into the reported death of a Lagos socialite popularly known as Elena, who allegedly died after undergoing a Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL) cosmetic surgery at a clinic in the state.

Authorities said the investigation is being carried out by the Health Facilities Monitoring and Accreditation Agency (HEFAMAA), the state body responsible for regulating, inspecting and accrediting healthcare facilities in Lagos. The probe followed reports circulating on social media suggesting that the woman developed serious complications either during or shortly after the aesthetic procedure.

According to officials, the aim of the investigation is to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the incident, including whether the clinic and medical personnel involved complied with established medical and regulatory standards governing cosmetic procedures in the state.

Preliminary findings indicate that the clinic where the surgery reportedly took place is registered with HEFAMAA. However, the agency emphasised that registration does not shield any facility from investigation when issues relating to patient safety, professional conduct, or medical negligence arise.

The state government also noted that cosmetic and aesthetic procedures such as BBL surgeries are regulated under strict guidelines in Lagos. These include requirements related to facility infrastructure, qualified medical practitioners, infection-control measures, proper patient consent procedures, anaesthetic safety and emergency response capacity.

Reports indicate that the deceased allegedly developed complications following the surgery, sparking widespread reactions on social media and calls from family members and members of the public for a full investigation into the circumstances that led to her death.

Medical experts have long warned about the potential risks associated with BBL procedures, which involve removing fat from other parts of the body and transferring it to the buttocks to enhance shape and volume. Complications such as severe infections, fat embolism and organ failure can occur, especially when procedures are carried out in poorly regulated environments.

The Lagos State Government has urged members of the public to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information while the investigation continues. Officials also advised residents seeking cosmetic procedures to ensure they use accredited medical facilities and qualified professionals to reduce the risk of medical complications.

Authorities said further updates will be provided as the investigation progresses.
