The Kebbi State Government has taken a decisive step ahead of the 2027 elections, ordering all political appointees with ambitions to contest to resign from their positions setting a firm deadline that signals the start of early political realignments.

According to an official directive issued through the Office of the Secretary to the State Government, all affected appointees are required to step down on or before Tuesday, March 31, 2026.

The order applies broadly across the state’s political structure, including commissioners, special advisers, senior aides, local government officials, and heads of ministries.

At its core, the directive is about compliance and fairness.

Authorities say the move aligns with existing electoral laws that require public office holders to resign before participating in partisan politics. This is intended to:

  • Prevent abuse of office
  • Ensure a level playing field for all aspirants
  • Maintain integrity within government institutions

By enforcing the rule early, the Kebbi government appears determined to avoid the blurred lines that often emerge when incumbents mix governance with political ambition.

Kebbi’s decision is not happening in isolation. Across Nigeria, similar directives have been issued at the federal level, reinforcing a broader push to separate public office from political campaigning ahead of 2027.
