In a case that has shocked many for both its severity and the age of the offender, a High Court in Kano State has sentenced an 85-year-old man, Malam Isah Abdullahi, to prison for rape.
The court, sitting in the Gwarzo Division, found him guilty after prosecutors presented evidence proving the offence beyond reasonable doubt. The crime, according to reports, was committed in November 2024 in Gabasawa Local Government Area.
Despite his advanced age, the court handed down a 14-year prison sentence, making it clear that age would not shield anyone from accountability in cases of sexual violence.
During the trial, the defence pleaded for leniency, but the presiding judge, Justice Aisha Mahmud, maintained that the gravity of the offence outweighed such considerations. The judgment emphasised the need to protect victims and uphold justice, regardless of the circumstances surrounding the accused.
The Kano State Ministry of Justice, which prosecuted the case, described the conviction as a strong statement against sexual offences, reaffirming its commitment to ensuring perpetrators are held accountable.
