In a In a renewed push to eliminate polio, authorities in Jigawa State have announced plans to vaccinate over 1.5 million children in an upcoming immunisation campaign.

The exercise, led by the Jigawa State Primary Healthcare Development Agency with support from UNICEF and the World Health Organization, will target children under the age of five across all communities in the state.

The campaign is part of a broader nationwide effort aimed at preventing any resurgence of the polio virus, even though Nigeria was declared polio-free in 2018. Health officials warn that continued vaccination is critical to completely eliminate any remaining traces of the virus.

To achieve full coverage, vaccination teams will be deployed for house-to-house visits, alongside designated fixed centres where parents can bring their children for immunisation.

Stakeholders are also placing strong emphasis on community awareness and participation. Media organisations and social media influencers have been engaged to help combat misinformation and encourage parents to allow their children to be vaccinated.

Health experts stress that the polio vaccine is safe, effective, and remains one of the most important tools in protecting children from lifelong paralysis.

Beyond health, the campaign reflects a larger goal ensuring that no child is left vulnerable due to preventable diseases.
