Iran’s Football Federation president, Mehdi Taj, has cast serious doubt on the national team’s ability to participate in the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico, following recent US-Israeli military strikes on Iranian soil that have escalated regional tensions and raised questions about travel, security and diplomatic engagement.

Taj said in comments carried by Iranian media that it’s uncertain whether Iran can play in the tournament, stressing that “after this attack, we cannot be expected to look forward to the World Cup with hope.” His remarks signal a potential withdrawal or boycott, although no formal decision has yet been announced by either the Iranian government or FIFA.

Iran drawn in Group G alongside Belgium, Egypt and New Zealand is scheduled to play three group matches in Los Angeles and Seattle in June 2026. The statement came after coordinated strikes by the United States and Israel on Iranian territory, which triggered retaliatory actions and deepened diplomatic rifts.

The uncertainty has stirred concern in football circles, as Iran’s World Cup status remains unresolved with only months to go before the tournament’s kick-off. FIFA has said it is monitoring developments closely as the situation evolves.

If Iran ultimately withdraws, the federation could face financial penalties or replacement under FIFA rules, with another team potentially taking its place in Group G although details would depend on timing and official decisions by football authorities.
