Gunmen have killed a 35-year-old man, Sufiyanu Garba, and abducted his wife during a violent attack in the Badariya area of Birnin Kebbi, Kebbi State. The incident reportedly occurred in the early hours of Thursday, throwing residents of the quiet neighbourhood into panic.

According to reports, the assailants invaded the victim’s residence at night and opened fire during the attack. Garba was fatally shot during the incident, while his wife was forcefully taken away by the gunmen to an unknown destination. Neighbours were said to have been awakened by the sound of gunshots but were unable to intervene due to fear and the speed of the attackers.

The Kebbi State Police Command later confirmed the incident, describing it as a tragic development. The command’s spokesperson, SP Bashir Usman, said the police received a distress report shortly after the attack and immediately mobilised officers to the scene.

Police operatives who responded to the emergency reportedly found the victim lying critically injured. He was quickly rushed to Sir Yahaya Memorial Hospital in Birnin Kebbi, where medical personnel confirmed him dead. His remains were subsequently deposited in the hospital morgue.

Authorities said preliminary investigations indicate that the gunmen escaped with the victim’s wife immediately after carrying out the attack. Security operatives have since launched a manhunt for the suspects while efforts are ongoing to locate and rescue the abducted woman.

The police added that the case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further investigation. Detectives are currently working to determine the motive behind the attack and identify those responsible.

Residents of the Badariya area expressed shock over the incident, describing the victim as a peaceful member of the community. Many said the attack has heightened fear among locals who are now worried about their safety, particularly at night.

Security agencies have urged members of the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious movements or individuals within their communities. They also assured residents that intensified patrols and intelligence-gathering operations are underway to prevent similar incidents.

The latest attack adds to growing concerns about insecurity in parts of northern Nigeria, where communities continue to face threats from armed groups involved in banditry, kidnappings and other violent crimes. Authorities say efforts are being strengthened to curb the activities of criminal elements and ensure the safety of residents across the state.
