Suspected gunmen have shot and killed Udeh Ijachi, a **former caretaker chairman of the Otukpo Local Government Area in Benue State, in a late-night attack that has shocked residents of the community.
Known in political circles as “Honourable Ukpem,” Ijachi was ambushed by unidentified attackers who opened fire on him on Thursday night near Okabido Hotel in Otukpo town, eyewitnesses said. The assailants fired multiple shots before fleeing the scene, leaving the former local government leader dead.
The killing has thrown the Otukpo community into fear and confusion, with residents describing the incident as sudden and terrifying. Many ran for safety after hearing gunshots, and a crowd gathered at the scene shortly after the attack.
As of the latest reports, security agencies have not yet issued an official statement, and the motive for the killing remains unclear. Local calls for justice are growing louder as residents urge authorities to step up security and thoroughly investigate the assassination.
Ijachi’s death follows a spate of violent crimes in parts of Benue State, a region that has long grappled with insecurity involving armed groups.
