A soldier and a personnel of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) have been injured following an explosion in Imo State.
The incident occurred in Orsu Local Government Area during a joint security operation by troops of the 34 Artillery Brigade. According to security sources, the operatives were conducting a raid on suspected criminal hideouts when the explosion happened.
Reports indicate that the explosion was caused by an improvised explosive device (IED), which had been planted and concealed in the area. The personnel reportedly stepped on the pressure-activated device, triggering the blast.
Both operatives sustained injuries from the explosion. They were immediately given first aid at the scene before being evacuated to a medical facility for further treatment.
Security sources also revealed that the operation was targeted at locations believed to be linked to criminal groups, including elements associated with the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed wing.
Authorities say clearance operations are ongoing in the area as security forces intensify efforts to dismantle armed groups and restore normalcy.
