At least eight suspected bandits are feared dead after an improvised explosive device (IED) they reportedly planted for security forces detonated prematurely.
The incident is said to have occurred in a banditry-prone area in northern Nigeria, where armed groups have increasingly adopted the use of explosives in attacks against troops and civilians.
According to reports, the device exploded while the bandits were attempting to position or transport it, killing several of them instantly. The explosion was described as accidental, with the group falling victim to their own weapon.
This development highlights a growing trend in the tactics used by bandits, who are now deploying IEDs similar to those used by insurgent groups to target military patrols and disrupt operations.
Security experts say such incidents, while rare, show both the خطر (risk) and unpredictability of handling explosives, especially by non-professionals. In previous similar cases, suspected bandits have also been killed when devices meant for attacks detonated unexpectedly.
Authorities are yet to release full official details on the latest explosion, but operations in the area are ongoing as security forces continue efforts to curb banditry.
The incident underscores a grim realityviolence in affected regions is evolving, and even those behind it are increasingly exposed to the dangers of their own weapons.
