A major power outage has affected parts of Lagos following a gas tanker explosion that caused significant damage to electricity infrastructure.

The blackout occurred after a collision between a tipper truck and a stationary gas tanker along the Lekki–Epe Expressway, which triggered a massive fire outbreak.

According to the Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC), the fire destroyed critical components of the power network, including the Ibeju and Medallion 33kV feeders, as well as conductors and overhead lines.

As a result, several communities were thrown into darkness, including areas like Sangotedo, Awoyaya, Eputu, Lakowe, and parts of the Ibeju axis.

EKEDC stated that its technical team is already working to repair the damaged infrastructure and restore electricity as quickly as possible, though no exact timeline has been given.

The blackout comes on the heels of the deadly explosion, which also claimed lives and destroyed shops and warehouses in the area, worsening the impact on residents and businesses.
