Suspected bandits have killed three soldiers and seven members of a local vigilante group during a violent attack on a community in Plateau State, worsening concerns over insecurity in Nigeria’s North-Central region.
The attack reportedly occurred in Wanka community in Keram district of Kanam Local Government Area, where armed men invaded the area and opened fire on residents. The attackers were said to have stormed the community in large numbers, causing panic among villagers.
According to local sources, security personnel and members of a community vigilante group quickly mobilised to confront the attackers. A fierce gun battle later broke out between the bandits and the joint team of soldiers and vigilantes attempting to repel the assault.
During the confrontation, three soldiers from the Nigerian Army and seven vigilante operatives were killed while defending the community. Residents said the clash lasted for some time before the attackers eventually fled the area.
Community members described the incident as devastating, noting that the vigilante members who lost their lives had been actively supporting security agencies in protecting rural communities from recurring attacks.
Although some residents claimed that several of the attackers may have been injured during the gunfight, the exact number of casualties on the bandits’ side has not been confirmed.
The incident has once again raised alarm over the security situation in parts of Plateau State, where communities have repeatedly suffered attacks linked to banditry and other forms of armed violence.
Local leaders have called on the government and security agencies to strengthen military operations in vulnerable communities and improve intelligence gathering to prevent further attacks.
Security authorities are expected to intensify patrols and operations in the affected area as efforts continue to track down the attackers and restore calm in the community.
