Suspected bandits have abducted eight worshippers during a church service in Kwara State, sparking fresh concerns over security in the region.

The attack occurred at an Evangelical Church Winning All (ECWA) in Omugo community, Ifelodun Local Government Area, where gunmen reportedly stormed the church on Sunday while service was ongoing.

Eyewitnesses said the attackers fired shots into the air to scare congregants before whisking away victims, creating panic as worshippers fled for safety.

Out of the eight abducted, three victims reportedly managed to escape, while five remain in captivity as of the time of reporting.

The Kwara State Government confirmed the incident, commending the swift response of security operatives, forest guards, and local vigilantes, who intervened and helped rescue some of the victims.

Authorities have since launched a manhunt for the attackers, with ongoing efforts to rescue those still held and bring the perpetrators to justice.

The attack, which targeted a place of worship, has been widely condemned by officials, who described it as cowardly and unacceptable.

The incident adds to growing insecurity concerns, particularly in rural communities, where churches and other soft targets continue to face attacks from armed groups.
