The distribution of rice by the City Boys Movement in Ekiti State has sparked widespread backlash, with many Nigerians criticising the manner in which the exercise was carried out.

The controversy followed viral videos showing members of the group sharing 25kg bags of rice directly to people along a busy road. The chaotic scene, which attracted large crowds, quickly drew reactions online, with critics describing the distribution as disorganised and unsafe.

Many social media users condemned the approach, arguing that such public giveaways could lead to stampedes and put lives at risk. Others questioned the intent behind the exercise, suggesting it appeared more like a publicity stunt than a well-planned welfare initiative.

The distribution is believed to be part of broader efforts by political support groups to provide relief materials amid ongoing economic hardship in the country. However, the execution in Ekiti has reignited debates about dignity, safety, and the proper way to carry out humanitarian support.

So far, there has been no official statement addressing the criticism, but the incident has added to growing public scrutiny of similar outreach activities across Nigeria.

What was meant to be an act of support has instead raised questions about planning, safety, and the line between aid and optics.
