Nigerian businessman and social commentator Isaac Fayose has sparked fresh political debate ahead of the 2027 elections with a controversial warning about the future of fuel prices.
In a recent statement, Fayose cautioned Nigerians against re-electing Bola Ahmed Tinubu, claiming that petrol could rise to as high as ₦5,000 per litre if the current administration continues.
According to him, the warning is tied to the current trend of rising fuel prices across Nigeria. As of now, petrol prices already range between roughly ₦1,100 and ₦1,300 per litre in different parts of the country figures that have triggered widespread concern over cost of living.
Fayose argued that the situation reflects deeper structural issues, particularly around Nigeria’s refining capacity. He questioned why an oil-producing nation still struggles with high fuel costs, pointing to what he described as mismanagement and lack of accountability in the oil sector.
His statement was also political. He urged Nigerians to take the 2027 elections seriously, warning that failure to demand accountability from leaders could lead to even more severe economic hardship.
However, it is important to note that Fayose’s claim is a personal projection, not an official forecast. Fuel prices are influenced by multiple factors, including global crude oil prices, exchange rates, local refining capacity, and government policy.
