Nollywood actor Aremu Afolayan has publicly apologised to Nigerians following backlash over his earlier comments suggesting that insecurity in the country was exaggerated.

The controversy began after the actor spoke at a political gathering supporting President Bola Ahmed Tinubu ahead of the 2027 elections, where he appeared to dismiss concerns about insecurity and economic hardship. His remarks quickly went viral and drew widespread criticism from Nigerians.

In response, Afolayan issued an emotional apology, admitting that his statement was wrong and poorly communicated. He clarified that insecurity is indeed a serious issue in Nigeria and acknowledged that many citizens are affected.

“I’m sorry… my heart is heavy because I’ve hurt a lot of Nigerians,” he said, adding that the situation of insecurity in the country is real and widespread.

To further emphasise his point, the actor shared a personal experience involving the kidnapping of a close associate’s family member, noting that ransom had to be paid highlighting the reality of insecurity.

Amid the backlash, Afolayan also announced his decision to withdraw from political involvement, stating that he would no longer support any political movement or candidate.

The incident has sparked conversations online about celebrity involvement in politics and the sensitivity of issues like insecurity and economic hardship in Nigeria.
