The Nigerian Police Force has arrested suspected human traffickers in Ondo State and rescued 14 victims, marking a significant breakthrough in the fight against modern slavery and trafficking in the region. The operation was carried out by officers from the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) following credible intelligence on the activities of a syndicate involved in trafficking and exploitation.

According to police sources, the syndicate was involved in recruiting vulnerable individuals under the guise of offering employment opportunities, only to subject them to exploitative conditions. Some of the victims, including women and young adults, were reportedly coerced and transported against their will, while others were lured with false promises of good jobs. The operation led to the arrest of multiple suspects believed to be key players in the network, though exact numbers have not been disclosed.

During the raid, 14 victims were found and subsequently rescued from unsafe conditions. The police provided immediate medical attention and are currently processing the victims for further support, including counselling, rehabilitation and reintegration assistance. The authorities have also commenced investigations to trace additional victims and dismantle the entire trafficking network.

The Commissioner of Police in Ondo State commended the officers for their proactive work and reiterated the force’s commitment to protecting citizens from human trafficking and related crimes. He urged members of the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to law enforcement agencies, noting that community cooperation is critical in curbing human trafficking.

Human trafficking continues to be a major challenge in parts of Nigeria, with criminal networks preying on unemployment, poverty and migration aspirations. Law enforcement agencies have stepped up operations in recent months, targeting syndicates that exploit vulnerable Nigerians and channel them into forced labour, domestic servitude and other forms of exploitation.

The Ondo State Police Command has reassured residents that the suspects will be charged to court once investigations are completed, and vowed to intensify efforts to prevent similar crimes.
