Islamic cleric, Sheikh Ahmad
Gumi, has called on the Federal Government to immediately suspend all military
and security cooperation with the United States following reports of US
airstrikes on terrorist targets in Nigeria.
Gumi warned that American
involvement in Nigeria’s security operations could aggravate the country’s
already fragile security situation and pose a threat to national sovereignty.
Reacting to the reported strikes,
the outspoken cleric cautioned that foreign military intervention often comes
with long-term consequences, insisting that Nigeria must take full
responsibility for resolving its internal security challenges without external
interference.
According to him, allowing the
United States to carry out military operations on Nigerian soil could
complicate ongoing counter-terrorism efforts and expose the country to broader
geopolitical interests that may not align with Nigeria’s priorities.
Gumi also expressed concern that
such cooperation could fuel further violence and radicalisation, particularly
if military actions result in civilian casualties or are perceived as foreign
aggression.
His comments come amid growing
public debate following confirmations by Nigerian authorities of ongoing
security and intelligence cooperation with the United States, which reportedly
led to precision airstrikes on terrorist targets in the North-West.
While the Federal Government has
maintained that the collaboration was conducted in line with international law
and with respect for Nigeria’s sovereignty, critics like Gumi argue that
relying on foreign powers undermines Nigeria’s independence and could weaken
trust between the government and local communities.
As reactions continue to trail
the reported airstrikes, the Federal Government has yet to respond directly to
Sheikh Gumi’s call, but has reiterated its commitment to combating terrorism
while protecting civilian lives and national unity.
