A new controversy has emerged following the passing of the late Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, as reports allege that the Ogun State Government has enlisted the Nigerian Army to guard the monarch’s grave for a full year.

According to HRH Erelu Oodua Mabel Tinuade Onaneye, the alleged deployment has raised questions about the circumstances surrounding the monarch’s burial and his relationship with traditional rites. “It remains a curious contradiction — a monarch enthroned by sacred customs, yet unwilling to submit to the very rites that conferred his legitimacy,” she stated.

In a strongly worded message, Erelu Oodua criticized what she described as a departure from Yoruba tradition, calling the burial of the late king without customary rites a “denial of cultural legacy.” She went further to call the late monarch “the only imperial Oba in my generation who ruined his inheritance.”

Her remarks reflect growing dissatisfaction among traditionalists who feel that modern influences and political interference have disrupted long-standing Yoruba royal customs. “Awon oba Yoruba ndojuti awa omo kootu ojire,” she lamented, appealing to Yoruba traditional leaders to uphold their heritage.

At the time of this report, the Ogun State Government has not issued an official statement in response to the claims.
