A teenage girl, identified as Omole Taiwo, has been killed after a bullet from a police officer’s firearm struck her during an operation in the Ajegunle area of Lagos State. Another girl was injured in the incident.

The Lagos State Police Command confirmed the shooting in a statement issued on Saturday, November 7, 2026, saying that an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), Omotayo Olajide, had been detained following the incident.

According to the police, the shooting occurred on Thursday, November 5, between 9:30 p.m. and 10 p.m. in the Nosamu area of Ajegunle. Officers had reportedly been deployed after receiving a distress call about a violent clash between two rival groups identified as the Nosamu Boys and the Alayabiagba Boys.

The groups were allegedly fighting over toll collection and were reportedly armed with cutlasses and other dangerous weapons. During the police operation, ASP Olajide discharged his firearm, and the bullet struck the two girls.

Both victims were initially rushed to Ajeromi General Hospital for treatment. However, one of the girls was later transferred to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Ikeja, where she died. The second victim is receiving medical attention and was reported to be in stable condition.

Following the incident, the police command said Olajide had been disarmed and detained. The case has also been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

The Commissioner of Police in Lagos State, Tijani Fatai, visited the family of the deceased to express his condolences. He assured them that the incident would be thoroughly investigated and that any officer found culpable would face appropriate consequences.

The command also stated that the investigation would establish the facts surrounding the discharge of the firearm and determine the necessary legal and disciplinary action. However, the police have not yet clarified whether the officer deliberately fired during the confrontation or whether the weapon discharged unintentionally.

The incident has renewed concerns about civilian safety during police operations, particularly in communities where security personnel respond to violent confrontations. The outcome of the investigation is expected to establish the circumstances that led to the death of the young girl and the injury sustained by the second victim.
