Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) forward Khvicha Kvaratskhelia has expressed his disappointment after suffering a serious knee injury, questioning why the setback happened despite his thorough preparations for the club’s UEFA Champions League clash against Barcelona.
The Georgian international sustained a rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his right knee during PSG’s 4-2 victory over Barcelona on Tuesday. The French club confirmed on Wednesday that the 25-year-old would undergo surgery in the coming days, although it did not announce a specific recovery timeline.
Kvaratskhelia broke his silence on the injury in an emotional message shared on social media, revealing that he had prayed before matches to leave the pitch without sustaining an injury.
“Why me? I was not ready for this,” the winger said, reflecting on the unexpected setback.
He explained that the injury was particularly difficult to accept because he believed he had prepared for the Barcelona encounter better than ever before.
The former Napoli player admitted that he was struggling to process what had happened but said he was determined to face the demanding rehabilitation period ahead.
“I thought I was prepared for everything, but no,” he said, adding that he was ready to endure months of hard work, pain and tears as he worked towards returning to football.
Despite his disappointment, Kvaratskhelia vowed to return stronger and thanked supporters who had continued to encourage him following the injury.
He promised not to waste time during his recovery and expressed his determination to repay the support he had received from fans, teammates and loved ones.
The injury represents a significant setback for PSG, who secured an impressive victory over Barcelona but lost three important players during the encounter.
Forward Ousmane Dembélé and captain Marquinhos also sustained thigh injuries, with the club confirming that both players would remain under treatment for the coming weeks.
Kvaratskhelia was forced off shortly before the hour mark after twisting his right knee. He was unable to put weight on the injured leg and required assistance to leave the pitch.
The winger played a significant role in PSG’s European success last season, recording 10 goals and six assists in the Champions League as the French side defended their title. His performances also earned him a place on the shortlist for the 2026 Ballon d’Or.
An ACL rupture typically requires an extended period of rehabilitation, often lasting six months or longer, depending on the severity of the injury, surgery and individual recovery progress. The full extent of Kvaratskhelia’s absence will become clearer following surgery and further medical assessments.
For now, the Georgian forward faces a challenging road back to competitive football, with his focus on recovery and fulfilling his promise to return stronger.
