The African Democratic Congress (ADC) Presidential Campaign Council has condemned a reported “AK-47 fire” remark by the Edo State Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Jarrett Tenebe, describing it as unacceptable political rhetoric ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The controversy followed a video circulating online in which Tenebe reportedly spoke about the APC’s target of securing 2.5 million votes for President Bola Tinubu in Edo State in the 2027 presidential election. He was quoted as referring to “AK-47 fire” against anyone who attempted to frustrate the party’s efforts to achieve the target.
Reacting in a statement on Sunday, ADC PCC Director of Media and Publicity, Kola Ologbondiyan, described the reported remark as “inciting” and “terroristic,” arguing that political competition should be based on votes rather than threats or intimidation.
“We are shocked that a state chairman of a ruling party, Mr Jarrett Tenebe, can stand before the public and threaten Nigerians with AK-47 rifles if they refuse to vote for his party, the APC. This is terrorism, and not politics,” Ologbondiyan said.
The ADC campaign council called on the APC leadership and President Tinubu to condemn the alleged statement or demand its retraction. It also urged the Inspector-General of Police, the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to investigate the circumstances surrounding the remark and determine whether any law was breached.
The council also raised concerns over a reported attack on ADC members and the destruction of vehicles belonging to party supporters in Gegu, Koton Karfi Local Government Area of Kogi State, saying the incident further underscored the need for authorities to prevent political intimidation and violence ahead of the elections.
