The Nigerian Senate has ordered an investigation into the death of a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, Etimbuk Daniel, at the Enugu State orientation camp amid concerns over medical facilities and emergency response services at camps nationwide.
The resolution was adopted on Thursday, October 15, 2026, following a motion of urgent public importance sponsored by Senator Aniekan Bassey, representing Akwa Ibom North-East Senatorial District.
Bassey called for a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding Daniel’s death and an urgent review of healthcare services available to corps members across the country.
He expressed concern over reports that the deceased, a former Students’ Union Government president of Akwa Ibom State University, died after experiencing complications from a headache and allegedly failing to receive timely and adequate medical attention at the camp clinic.
According to reports, Daniel complained of a headache and was given medication at the camp. His condition reportedly deteriorated afterwards, prompting him to request a transfer to a hospital. However, approval for the transfer allegedly came too late, and he died before he could receive further medical attention.
The allegations have raised concerns about the availability of qualified medical personnel, functional healthcare facilities and effective emergency referral systems at NYSC orientation camps.
Bassey described Daniel’s death as tragic, stressing that the government had a responsibility to protect the lives and welfare of young Nigerians mobilised for national service.
He cited Section 14(2)(b) of the 1999 Constitution, which identifies the security and welfare of the people as the primary purpose of government, and called for urgent measures to prevent similar incidents.
The Senate Chief Whip, Mohammed Tahir Monguno, seconded the motion, supporting the call for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death.
Contributing to the debate, Senator Abdul Ningi, representing Bauchi Central, expressed condolences to Daniel’s family and the people of Akwa Ibom State. He urged the relevant committees to recommend concrete measures to prevent a recurrence.
The Senate subsequently directed its committees on Police Affairs, Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters, Ethics, Code of Conduct and Public Petitions, Youth Development, and Health to investigate the incident in collaboration with the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services.
The investigation will also examine the state of medical facilities and emergency response arrangements at NYSC orientation camps nationwide.
The lawmakers observed a minute of silence in honour of the deceased and called for accountability should the investigation establish any negligence.
