Spanish football giants Real Madrid have demanded the immediate resignation of La Liga president Javier Tebas following controversial comments in which he compared the club’s communication strategy to propaganda techniques used by Nazi Germany.
The club made the demand in an official statement on Friday, October 16, 2026, describing Tebas’s remarks as offensive and incompatible with the responsibilities of his positions as La Liga president and vice-president of the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF).
The controversy erupted after Tebas criticised Real Madrid’s management and television channel, Real Madrid TV, accusing them of repeatedly highlighting controversial refereeing decisions, fuelling suspicion and portraying the club as a victim of unfair treatment.
In a post on social media, Tebas compared the alleged communication tactics to methods used by Joseph Goebbels, Nazi Germany’s minister of propaganda during World War II. He clarified that his comparison concerned propaganda techniques rather than Nazi ideology or Real Madrid supporters.
Real Madrid rejected the remarks, describing them as unacceptable and arguing that they demonstrated a lack of neutrality, respect and impartiality on the part of the La Liga president.
The club also accused Tebas of repeatedly attacking its leadership and media operations, insisting that his conduct was incompatible with his institutional responsibilities.
In addition to demanding his resignation as La Liga president, Real Madrid called for his removal as vice-president of the RFEF. The club also renewed calls for reforms to Spain’s football governance and refereeing structures.
The dispute adds to the longstanding tension between Real Madrid and Tebas, particularly over refereeing controversies and the administration of Spanish professional football.
In September, Real Madrid had also called for Tebas to step down following his criticism of the club’s complaints about refereeing decisions during the Madrid derby.
Tebas, who has served as La Liga president since 2013, was re-elected unopposed in 2023 for a term running until 2027.
As of Friday, there was no indication that he intended to resign from either position.
