Patients seeking medical attention at Maitama District Hospital in Abuja were left waiting on Saturday morning after a power outage disrupted services at the public health facility.

A report by The Punch said the blackout was observed at about 9:30 a.m. on October 10, 2026, with patients sitting in waiting areas without normal lighting. A nurse reportedly said the hospital had been without electricity for more than an hour.

The outage also affected the hospital’s computer-based operations, making it difficult for staff to access patients’ electronic medical records. Some patients reportedly experienced delays in receiving attention because their information was stored on the hospital’s computer systems.

A patient told the newspaper that those waiting had been informed that staff could not attend to them because the facility had no electricity and their records were stored electronically.

A security guard at the hospital said staff members did not know when electricity would be restored. As of the time of the report, hospital management had not issued an official explanation for the outage.

The incident comes amid wider electricity supply disruptions affecting parts of the Federal Capital Territory. The Abuja Electricity Distribution Company recently attributed outages in several areas to a technical fault on the 330kV Shiroro–Katampe transmission line, although no direct link between that fault and the hospital’s blackout was confirmed.
