A passenger aboard a Kenya Airways flight from Nairobi to Lagos has died after becoming unresponsive shortly before the aircraft landed at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos.
The incident occurred on Tuesday night, October 6, 2026, at about 9:20pm Nigerian time, approximately 20 minutes before the flight was due to land, according to Kenya Airways.
The airline said its crew responded immediately, administered first aid and followed established emergency procedures.
The aircraft landed at the Lagos airport at about 9:41pm, where medical personnel boarded the plane and subsequently confirmed that the passenger had died. The airline did not disclose the passenger’s identity or cause of death.
The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority said the police had taken over the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the passenger’s death.
NCAA Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Michael Achimugu, said the passenger was reportedly being returned to his point of departure after allegedly being denied entry into the country at an earlier stage of his journey.
Achimugu further said the passenger became restless and aggressive during the flight and allegedly attempted to gain access to the cockpit before trying to open the aircraft’s rear door. He said the passenger was restrained to prevent further disruption.
The police have commenced investigations and are expected to establish the circumstances leading to the passenger’s death. The deceased’s remains have reportedly been deposited at a morgue in Ikeja, while members of the flight crew have been interviewed.
Kenya Airways expressed condolences to the deceased’s family and friends, saying it was working with the family, local authorities and aviation regulators while respecting the privacy and dignity of everyone involved.
