A nine-year-old boy has been arrested by the Yobe State Police Command after a fire outbreak killed four members of his family at Rugan Badali in Karasuwa Local Government Area of the state.

The victims were identified as the boy’s two stepmothers and two younger brothers. The incident occurred after the minor allegedly set the family’s home ablaze while the victims were asleep.

According to the police, the boy confessed that he bought matches and set the house on fire after becoming angry with his father for beating him over an alleged case of stealing a fowl. He reportedly admitted that he initially concealed his involvement before confessing three days later.

The suspect was paraded alongside his father, Abubakar Idi, by the Police Public Relations Officer in Yobe, ASP Yusuf Adamu-Ali. The police said the minor would be investigated in accordance with the law.

The tragedy occurred in the same Rugan Badali community where a fire incident in August killed a woman, Bilkisu, and her three children. The earlier victims were members of Mallam Bukar’s family, and their deaths were confirmed by the Yobe State Emergency Management Agency.

The latest incident has raised concerns over child welfare and supervision in the affected community, with the police saying investigations are ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the fire.
