The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has identified two suspected cases of Ebola disease in Nigeria’s North-East region, prompting fresh public health concerns as investigations and laboratory testing continue.
The agency disclosed the development in an update shared on its official X account on Saturday, October 31, 2026, stating that both individuals had been isolated.
According to the NCDC, health officials have commenced contact identification and listing to establish who may have been exposed to the suspected cases. Laboratory tests are also being conducted to determine whether the individuals have contracted the virus.
However, the agency cautioned against interpreting the identification of the individuals as suspected cases as confirmation of Ebola infection. It stressed that their status would only be established through laboratory results.
The NCDC urged Nigerians to maintain proper hand hygiene, practise enhanced sanitation and follow public health guidance while investigations continue. It also promised to provide further updates as verified information becomes available.
The development comes amid Nigeria’s ongoing response to the recent Ebola outbreak involving the Bundibugyo strain. On October 20, 2026, the Federal Government confirmed an imported case involving a woman who had travelled from Uganda to Abuja. She was subsequently evacuated to Switzerland for further treatment.
The NCDC has not disclosed the specific states where the two newly identified suspected cases were found. It has also not established any connection between them and the previously confirmed case.
As laboratory investigations continue, health authorities are expected to determine whether the two suspected infections are confirmed cases and whether there are any additional contacts requiring monitoring.
For now, the agency’s clarification remains important: the two individuals are suspected cases, and neither infection has been confirmed.
