Manchester United are reportedly interested in signing Super Eagles defender Calvin Bassey as the club assesses its defensive options ahead of a possible squad rebuild in 2027.

According to a report by TEAMtalk, the Premier League side have been impressed by Bassey’s performances for Fulham this season and are keeping a close watch on his situation.

The 26-year-old has become an important figure at Fulham, with his performances reportedly earning him the captain’s armband. His ability to operate both as a centre-back and left-back is also believed to make him an attractive option for Manchester United.

United are considering changes to their defence, with Luke Shaw, Lisandro Martínez and Harry Maguire all approaching the end of their current contracts next summer. The club is therefore assessing possible reinforcements as it plans for the future.

However, Manchester United are not the only club monitoring the Nigerian international. TEAMtalk reports that Newcastle United and Everton are also interested, while Inter Milan, Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig are among the European clubs keeping tabs on him.

Bassey’s contract with Fulham is due to expire next summer, although the club reportedly has the option to extend it by another year. Fulham are also interested in agreeing a new deal with the defender.

Despite the growing interest, there has been no confirmation of a formal transfer offer from Manchester United. The reported interest currently centres on the club monitoring Bassey as it evaluates its options ahead of the next transfer window.

Bassey joined Fulham in 2023 after spells with Rangers and Ajax. A potential move to Old Trafford would represent another major step in the Nigerian defender’s club career.
