The Jigawa State Police Command has arrested two suspects over the alleged vandalism of electricity installations, including a streetlight cable and a power transformer, in separate incidents across the state.
The command’s spokesperson, SP Lawan Shiisu Adam, disclosed this in a statement, identifying the suspects as Aminu Musa, 38, of New Gwaram Town in Gwaram Local Government Area, and Laminu Sha’aibu, 26, of Gumusuwa Village in Kafin Hausa Local Government Area.
According to the police, Musa was arrested on September 25, 2026, at about 1 a.m. while allegedly cutting the armoured cable of a streetlight in New Gwaram. The police said he operated a streetlight generator in the area. Officers reportedly visited the scene and recovered relevant exhibits before commencing an investigation.
In a separate incident, Sha’aibu was arrested on September 29 at Maskangayu Village in Auyo Local Government Area after residents allegedly found him in possession of dismantled transformer coils. The police said officers intervened after receiving information that an angry mob was threatening to attack him.
The police said Sha’aibu was rescued and taken to a nearby primary healthcare centre for treatment. He was subsequently discharged, while the dismantled transformer components were recovered.
During interrogation, Sha’aibu reportedly told investigators that he had spent three nights dismantling the transformer without being detected. The command said investigations were conducted to establish the circumstances surrounding both incidents and determine whether other people were involved.
The police confirmed that both cases had been charged before the appropriate court for prosecution.
Reacting to the arrests, the Commissioner of Police in Jigawa State, CP Tijjani Murtala, commended residents whose timely information assisted the police. He urged members of the public to report suspicious activities, particularly those involving electricity installations, streetlights and other public infrastructure.
The command reiterated its commitment to protecting public property and working with local communities to prevent vandalism. The suspects remain subject to the judicial process, and the allegations against them have yet to be determined by the court.
