The Federal Government has dismissed reports of a planned increase in electricity tariffs, assuring Nigerians that its immediate priority is improving power supply and strengthening the national grid.

The Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, gave the clarification on Thursday, October 15, 2026, during the groundbreaking ceremony for interconnected mini-grid projects in Ibadan, Oyo State.

Tegbe urged Nigerians to disregard reports suggesting that the government was planning to increase electricity tariffs, insisting that no such policy was being considered.

He said the administration was focused on developing a power sector capable of providing reliable electricity around the clock.

According to the minister, the government’s commitment is to achieve a 24-hour electricity supply while expanding access to power and improving the reliability of existing infrastructure.

Tegbe explained that ongoing interventions were designed to strengthen electricity generation and transmission, reduce power outages and improve service delivery to consumers.

He added that the government was pursuing strategic investments in critical transmission corridors to address infrastructure challenges and improve the stability of the national grid.

The minister also emphasised the importance of expanding electricity access through renewable energy projects and interconnected mini-grids, particularly in communities with limited access to reliable power.

His remarks came amid persistent concerns over electricity costs and reports of a possible tariff review.

In July, the minister similarly stated that the government had no immediate plans to increase electricity tariffs, despite broader discussions about reforms to address the financial challenges facing the power sector.

The Federal Government has also acknowledged the need to address mounting debts in the electricity market while protecting vulnerable consumers from additional financial pressure.

The latest clarification reinforces the government’s stated position that improving electricity supply and reliability remains its immediate priority rather than increasing tariffs.
